KENNETH WAYNE BATES, age 56, a resident of St. Joseph, Louisiana, was charged today in a one-count indictment by a Federal Grand Jury for possession with the intent to distribute 500 grams or more of cocaine hydrochloride, announced
U. S. Attorney Jim Letten.

According to court documents, on or about February 15, 2012, BATES knowingly and intentionally possessed with the intent to distribute 500 grams or more of cocaine hydrochloride.

If convicted, BATES faces a maximum term of forty (40) years imprisonment, a fine of $2,000,000, and four (4) years of supervised release following any term of imprisonment.

U. S. Attorney Letten reiterated that the indictment is merely a charge and that the guilt of the defendant must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.

The case was investigated by U. S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Homeland Security Investigations. The case is being prosecuted by Special Assistant U. S. Attorney Joe La Rocca.
